THE HIDDEN INSPIRATIONS: UNDEAD VIKING MAFIA, inmersos en un sentimiento desesperanzador

Atlanta es cuna de una diversidad musical impresionante, albergando artistas de diversos géneros tales como el Rock Pop, el Ska, el Rap, Folk, Punk, y por supuesto, el Metal. Provenientes de esta ciudad, tenemos a la banda UNDEAD VIKING MAFIA, que promete tener un lugar importante dentro de la historia musical local y que lleva como bandera el género del Sludge, platicamos con Juan Baez III, frontman de la banda, esto fue lo que nos contó…

¡Hola Juan! ¿Nos puedes platicar como está la formación actual de la banda?

¡Hola, que tal! Claro, Adam Wesolowski en la guitarra, Tony Bullard en el bajo, Tyler Trail en la batería, y yo me encargo de las vocales.

¿Nos puedes dar una pequeña bio de la banda?

Nos formamos en 2007, todo comenzó cuando Tyler y Adam se juntaban a tocar en el sótano solo por diversión, tocando canciones de Miller High Life (Cerveza). Me uní a la banda y desarrollamos un sonido diferente y enfocado, Andrew Lester se incorporó como bajista y permaneció hasta 2012 cuando se mudó a Florida, entonces contratamos a Tony Bullard y esa ha sido la alineación hasta hoy.

¿Qué bandas los han influenciado?

Adam siempre ha sido un gran fan de “CKY”, gran parte de nuestro estilo proviene de ellos, aunque también hay mucho de “Maylene & the Sons of Disaster” y “Black Label Society”.

Tony ha estado muy metido con “Red Fang” y “The Sword” por mucho tiempo, últimamente también escucha a “Pilgrim” (Yo también, gran banda, genial en directo).

A Tyler le encanta “Hum”, los ha visto muchas veces incluyendo algunos conciertos de su último Tour con “Torche”, otra de sus bandas favoritas. También toca mucho los discos de “Deafheaven”.

Para mí la era de Pepper Keenan en “Corrosion of Conformity” son algunas de las más grandes canciones escritas. Por lo general soy el que escucha el material más pesado dentro de la banda. Los dos últimos discos de “Behemoth” son parte también de lo que escucho regularmente. Hace algún tiempo compartimos con “Artificial Brain” así que también últimamente los escucho, estoy ansioso de oír lo nuevo de ellos.

¿De qué temáticas abordan en sus canciones? ¿Tienen algún mensaje en especial?

Varios, me gusta mantener algunos elementos de fantasía en nuestra música, sin embargo, la mayoría de las veces es más un sentimiento directo que rompe hacia las letras. Definitivamente mucha fatalidad o inutilidad, hay un mundo raro allá afuera especialmente en estados unidos ahora mismo, además no estamos muy en la onda del metal esperanzador.

¿Cuál creen que deba ser el siguiente paso en su carrera musical?

Estamos trabajando en material que probablemente termine como un EP, algunas de esas canciones la hemos tocado en Vivo. También estamos planeando una pequeña gira por el sur este americano.

Como banda, ¿Qué planes tienen a futuro?...

!Lograrlo a nivel mundial¡

Con referente a los fans, ¿Cómo se sienten con la respuesta que han tenido por parte del público alrededor del mundo?...

¡Nos encanta! Hemos enviado CD’s a España, el Reino Unido, Alemania, Australia, incluso a Japón, somos una banda pequeña en Atlanta y sabemos que nuestra música ha alcanzado lugares lejanos, ¡es asombroso!

Durante los eventos que han tenido, ¿tienen algún dato curioso que deseen compartir?

¡Si! Hay un lugar genial en Chattanooga, se llama Ziggy’s, está dividido en tres partes, El bar, que sirve cerveza y un poco de comida (no comimos allí), el lugar para tocar, que tiene una extraña altura y de alguna manera un escenario pequeño pero el salón tiene un buen tamaño, ahí no se vende licor, así que tienes que ir a la vinatería y comprar tu propia botella para llevarla al lugar, así que en lugar de comprar algunos tragos, solo estuvimos bebiendo de nuestras propias botellas de Whisky, fue un show bastante divertido.

¿Cómo pueden definir su música?

Nosotros lo definimos como Southern Sludge, le ponemos un poco más de Groove que las otras bandas de Sludge o Doom, sin embargo, estamos en la frecuencia de la mayoría de las bandas Sludge que hay en la escena de Nueva Orleans. En realidad no nos enfocamos en un solo género, lo que oyes es la música que naturalmente hacemos juntos.

En términos individuales, ¿Que sienten que les hace falta por hacer en su carrera como músicos?...

Nunca hemos hecho un tour en forma, así que ese es nuestro primer punto en las lista de deseos.

En cuanto a difusión, ¿Que opinión tienen acerca del internet y el impacto qué ha tenido en la industria de la música?...

Por un lado, no tendríamos una plataforma real para exponer nuestra música si no fuera por internet, por otro lado, es más difícil llegar al público ya que existe gran oferta de bandas intentado promocionarse a través de los mismos medios, ya que tienen las mismas herramientas y habilidades, no digo que sea una competencia como tal, sin embargo, como consumidor es difícil elegir entre una cantidad inmensa de música para encontrar nuevas bandas que puedan gustarte. Hay definitivamente más pros que contras, es mi opinión.

An impressive number of artist call Atlanta home, where a diversity of genres are all around like Pop Rock, Ska, Rap, Punk, and of course Metal. UNDEAD VIKING MAFIA also call this place home and they are one of the prominent bands in the Sludge Genre, we spoke to the front man Juan Baez III and this is what he told us…

Hi Juan! Which is the current line-up in the band?

Making history, which is the origin of the band, when was it formed?

We formed in 2007. It started out as just Tyler and Adam jamming out in the basement as sort of a joke band, with songs about Miller High Life. I joined the band and we developed a different sound and focus. Andrew Lester was added to the lineup on bass and we stayed that way till 2012. Andrew moved to Florida and we filled the bass void with Tony Bullard. We’ve been this lineup since then.

Talking about bands and literature, which are your main influences?

Adam has always been a huge “CKY” fan and a lot of his style stems from that, but there’s some “Maylene & the Sons of Disaster” and some “Black Label Society” in there as well.

Tony’s been into “Red Fang” and “The Sword” for a long time, he’s also listening to “Pilgrim” lately (so am I, GREAT band, GREAT concert).

Tyler LOVES “Hum.” He’s seen them several times including a few on their recent tour with “Torche,” another one of his favorite acts. He’s also been spinning “Deafheaven” records a lot.

For me, the Pepper Keenan era of “Corrosion of Conformity” are some of the greatest songs ever made. I’m usually the one to listen to heavier stuff out of crew as well though. The last two albums “Behemoth” have released remain in my playlists. And a while back we shared a bill with “Artificial Brain” and I’ve been listening to them a lot lately. Real excited to hear more off of their new album.

In addition to the previous question, how do you define your own music?

We always say Southern Sludge. We do carry a pop-ier groove than most sludge or doom out there, but we sit in the same sludge range as a lot of the New Orleans scene.

Is this project focused on one single genre?

We’ve never really focused on any genre. What you hear is the music we naturally make together.

Any member of the band has any alternative project or collaboration? If yes, is in a different genre?

We don’t have any side projects we can talk about right now, I can say there’s a couple in the works though.

Talking about lyrics, which are the main topics in your music?

They vary quite a bit. I like to keep some fantasy elements in our songs, but there’s plenty of times that it’s a more raw feeling that breaks through lyrically.

Which is the message you are trying to give through your music?

There’s definitely a lot of doom-like futility we push forward. It’s a weird world out there, especially in America right now. Plus we’re not too into hopeful metal.

Which is the following step on your career as a band?

We’ve begun work on some new songs that will likely end up on a new EP. We’ve been performing one of them live already. We’re also looking into a small southeastern US tour.

Which are the future plans for the band?

Take over the world.

In Regards of your fans, how do you feel about the response from the audience around the world?

We love it. We’ve sent cd’s to Spain, UK, Germany, Australia and even Japan. We’re a small band in Atlanta and knowing that our music has reached so many so far away, is an awesome thing.

Can you tell us some weird or funny story that have happened while touring?

There’s an awesome venue in Chattanooga named Ziggy’s. It consists of three parts. The bar, which serves beer and maybe some food (we didn’t eat there). The venue, which has an oddly high and somewhat small stage but a great size room. But the bar/venue don’t sell liquor. For that, you go to Ziggy’s liquor store and buy yourself a bottle to bring back over to the venue/bar. So rather than buying some shots, we were just legally drinking our own bottles of whisky. It was damn fun show.

As individuals, what else do you want to do in your career as musicians?

We’ve never done a proper tour so that’s usually the biggest thing on our to do list.

Talking about broadcasting, what do you think about internet, and how it has influenced the music industry?

On one hand, we wouldn’t have a real platform to get our music out there if it wasn’t for the internet. But on the other hand, it’s a lot more difficult to get anyone to hear you since there are so many bands out there with the same tools and abilities. Not saying it’s competition, but as a consumer it’s hard to cut through the immense amount of music to find new bands that you might like. There’s definitely more pros than cons though.
